Our Story

Born from love. Built for dignity.

Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre was established in 2023 in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria β€” named in honour of its founder, Lilian Oyama, and her late mother, Mama Lucy Efu. The loss of Mama Lucy became the catalyst for a lifelong professional mission: to ensure that every elderly person in Nigeria receives the dignity, compassion, and care they have earned and deserve.

What began as a personal calling has grown into a registered non-governmental organisation delivering healthcare support, elder abuse prevention, social engagement, and community advocacy across Cross River State and beyond.

Our work is grounded in the belief that ageing is not a burden β€” it is a privilege to be celebrated. Every programme we design, every elder we serve, and every volunteer we train carries forward the spirit of Mama Lucy's legacy.

"

Our vision is to create a society where every elderly individual can live a life free from abuse and mistreatment β€” surrounded by compassion, care, and the resources to age with grace.

In Loving Memory

Mama Lucy Efu

The Heart Behind the Name

Mama Lucy Efu was the beloved mother of Lilian Oyama β€” and the quiet, enduring inspiration behind everything Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre stands for. A woman of grace, strength, and quiet dignity, Mama Lucy embodied the very values her daughter has dedicated her career to protecting: the right of every elder to be seen, honoured, and cared for.

Her passing did not end her story β€” it began a new chapter. The name Li-Lu carries both of them forward: Lilian and Lucy. Every elder we serve, every hand we hold, and every life we touch is a tribute to Mama Lucy's legacy. She is the reason this centre exists. She is the reason we will never stop.

Our Mission & Programmes

Six pillars of care.

Our programmes are designed with an internationally informed, evidence-based approach β€” culturally responsive to the complex needs of elderly Nigerians, and grounded in over eight years of direct gerontological social work experience.

01

Healthcare Support

Facilitating access to medical care, health screenings, and wellness programmes for elderly Nigerians who would otherwise go without essential services.

02

Elder Abuse Prevention

Educating communities, training caregivers, and advocating for the legal rights of older adults to live free from neglect, exploitation, and mistreatment.

03

Social Engagement

Creating meaningful connections through community programmes, cultural activities, and peer support networks that combat isolation and restore purpose.

04

Caregiver Education

Equipping families and professional caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to provide dignified, evidence-based elder care.

05

Community Outreach

Extending our reach into rural and underserved communities across Cross River State, delivering care packages and support directly to elders in need.

06

Advocacy & Policy

Championing systemic change through research, public awareness campaigns, and engagement with government bodies on elder rights and welfare policy.

Who We Serve

Every elder who needs us.

Our doors are open to all elderly individuals across Nigeria β€” especially the vulnerable, isolated, and unheard.

01

Isolated Elders

Senior individuals living alone without family support, at risk of loneliness and self-neglect β€” we bring connection and care directly to their lives.

02

Abuse Survivors

Elderly individuals experiencing or recovering from abuse and mistreatment β€” we provide safe spaces, advocacy, and compassionate resources.

03

Rural Communities

Elders in underserved rural areas across Cross River State with limited access to healthcare β€” we extend our reach without compromise.

04

Family Caregivers

Families caring for elderly loved ones who need guidance, respite support, and resources to provide the best possible care at home.

Meet the Founder & CEO

Lilian Oyama, MSW, BSW β€” Gerontologist. Advocate. Founder.

Lilian Oyama is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre β€” a registered non-governmental organisation committed to protecting the dignity and enhancing the quality of life of elderly Nigerians. A certified Gerontologist with more than eight years of specialised experience in elder care, social work, and community advocacy, she stands among Nigeria's most dedicated champions for the rights and wellbeing of older adults.

Ms. Oyama holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Rutgers University, New Jersey β€” one of America's premier research institutions in social welfare β€” and a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Seton Hall University, New Jersey. Her academic foundation is further strengthened by a B.Sc. in Banking and Finance from the University of Calabar, Nigeria, equipping her with the institutional and financial leadership competencies essential to building a high-impact organisation.

As a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, Ms. Oyama brings an internationally informed, evidence-based perspective to every programme she leads. Her career spans direct clinical service in residential care facilities across New Jersey, elder rights advocacy, programme development, and grassroots community engagement throughout Cross River State. She is particularly skilled in designing culturally responsive interventions for elderly individuals living with social isolation, abuse, developmental disabilities, and complex health conditions.

Ms. Oyama founded Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre in 2023 in loving memory of her mother, Mama Lucy Efu, whose passing ignited a lifelong professional mission: to ensure that every elderly person in Nigeria is seen, valued, and cared for with the grace and compassion they have earned.

"Before Li-Lu Caring Hands found me, I had not eaten a proper meal in three days. Now I have people who check on me every week. I feel like I matter again."

Mama Agatha was living alone after her children relocated abroad. Suffering from hypertension and mild dementia, she had no one to help manage her medications or ensure she ate regularly. Li-Lu volunteers discovered her during a community outreach walk in 2024. Today she receives weekly home visits, a monthly food pack, and regular blood pressure monitoring. Her daughter now stays in touch with the centre for updates.

"The young people from Li-Lu β€” they treat me like their own grandfather. They listen to me. That is the greatest gift you can give an old man."

Pa Emmanuel, a retired civil servant, was experiencing severe loneliness and early signs of depression following the death of his wife of 54 years. His neighbours contacted Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre after noticing he had stopped leaving his home. Volunteers began regular companionship visits, enrolled him in the centre's elder social group, and connected him with a grief counsellor. Within three months, Pa Emmanuel was attending monthly elder gatherings and had regained his appetite for life.

"My son was taking my pension money every month and leaving me with nothing. Li-Lu Caring Hands spoke up for me when I could not speak for myself."

Mama Theresa came to Li-Lu Caring Hands Centre through a referral from a local church after disclosing financial abuse by a family member. The centre's social work team intervened, facilitated family mediation, and connected her with legal aid services. Her pension is now protected through a managed account arrangement. She has since become a vocal advocate for elder rights in her community and regularly shares her story at Li-Lu awareness events.

"I used to think getting old meant becoming invisible. Li-Lu showed me that my story still matters β€” and that there are people who want to hear it."

Pa Joseph, a former teacher, was struggling with mobility challenges after a fall that left him with a fractured hip. Unable to afford physiotherapy, he was confined to his home for over six months. Li-Lu Caring Hands mobilised a volunteer physiotherapist, provided a walking aid, and arranged transport to follow-up medical appointments. Pa Joseph has since regained his ability to walk independently and volunteers as a reading mentor for children in his neighbourhood.
